Polyester, nylon, acrylic and elastane
Modern synthetics are common but not risk-free.
Polyester is durable and widely used, but can hold oily soil, attract static and be vulnerable to heat-set stains.
Nylon can yellow, grey, weaken or be affected by sunlight, heat and some chemicals. It is common in jackets, sportswear, bags and trims.
Acrylic can resemble wool but is heat sensitive. Elastane provides stretch but can fail from heat, chlorine, ageing, solvent exposure or aggressive pressing.
