Australian care labelling in 2026

Care labels are the starting point, not the whole decision.

Australian care labels help identify fibre content, warnings and recommended cleaning methods. They do not remove the need for professional judgement.

A care label may permit washing, dry cleaning or drying, but age, staining, trim, colour migration, coating, adhesive, garment construction and previous wear can change the risk.

Where a label is missing, contradictory, unreadable or unsuitable for the observed item, record the risk and obtain customer acknowledgement before proceeding.

Workplace checklist
  • Read symbols and written warnings
  • Look for fibre content and trim warnings
  • Check country-of-origin and manufacturer notes
  • Escalate missing, unreadable or contradictory labels
  • Use Australian consumer and workplace obligations as the standard
